Demographics
By the early 1850s, the region southeast of the fort and the Trinity River was effectively safeguarded and likely had established settlements. Notably, eight interconnected families relocated from Illinois to this area in 1853. Among them, three of the Gibson brothers settled approximately four miles northwest of what is now Mansfield. This community, later named the Gibson Community, had a school and a church building by 1860.
